Frequently asked questions
Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions about the Museum für Naturkunde Chemnitz.
General information
How do I get to the Museum of Natural History?
The exhibition of the Museum of Natural History Chemnitz is located on the 1st floor of the DAStietz cultural department store directly in the city center. It is therefore easily accessible, both by car and by public transport.
By public transport:
The Zentralhaltestelle, Chemnitz stop is served by most bus and streetcar lines and is located directly in front of the DAStietz entrance. From Chemnitz main station you can reach us on foot in about 15 minutes (1.2 km) in the direction of the city center. You can find timetable information at www.cvag.de
By car:
The exhibition is easy to reach by car, but does not have its own parking facilities. However, there are public parking facilities in the immediate vicinity (approx. five minutes' walk).
Are there parking spaces near the museum?
Yes, there are several parking garages near the museum (for a fee):
Parking garage Moritzhof
Bahnhofstraße 53, Chemnitz
Rosenhof parking garage
Theaterstraße 45, 09111 Chemnitz
Due to the central location of the exhibition right next to the "Zentralhaltestelle", it is also very easy to reach by public transport.
When are the excavation site or the fossil workshop open?
The excavation site is currently only open for events. You can find currently planned events here.
Due to structural restrictions, the fossil workshop in the Stadtwirtschaft is currently not accessible to visitors. However, we are working on a solution and hope to be able to open part of the workshop to visitors soon.
Is the museum barrier-free?
Yes, the Museum für Naturkunde Chemnitz is barrier-free.
Our museum is barrier-free. There are no stairs or inclines to climb from the CVAG bus stop to the museum. The museum is located on the 1st floor, which can be reached by elevator.
All exhibition areas are wheelchair-accessible. Appropriate passage widths and level floors allow wheelchair users to visit our exhibition unhindered. The barrier-free functional rooms (WC) are located on the first floor of the Tietz. You can obtain the key from the museum ticket office on the first floor.
The majority of our display cases in the permanent exhibition and all terrariums in the insectarium are easy to see for wheelchair users. Unfortunately, some exhibits in historical display cases are difficult to see from a seated position.
The museum educator will be happy to arrange individual events for people with disabilities in a direct conversation. Please contact us by telephone or e-mail for inquiries and arrangements:

Can I take my dog to the museum?
To protect the animals and the exhibitions, you are not permitted to bring your pet into the museum. Guide dogs are of course permitted.
Why is everything here purple?
The violet color scheme of our new website is inspired by a remarkable detail of the Chemnitz Petrified Forest: Some of the petrified wood from the Permian period has a violet coloration, which was created by the incorporation of minerals such as fluorite. This coloration can only be found here in Europe and makes the Chemnitz finds unique. We would like to highlight these special finds with the purple coloration.
Exhibitions
What permanent exhibitions can be seen in the museum?
Sterceleanum
In the Sterzeleanum exhibition, visitors experience the fascination of petrified wood and learn more about the history of Chemnitz's "Petrified Forest". Immerse yourself in the tropical world of the Permian, with giant insects and exotic plants, and experience the dramatic effects of a volcanic eruption that both destroyed and preserved the region. You can also experience how geologists and palaeontologists use their detective skills to reconstruct the traces of past life.
Historical cabinet
In the Historical Cabinet, you can discover the beginnings of the Chemnitz Museum of Natural History. Original display cases show exhibits from the "Municipal Natural History Collections", the first museum in the city of Chemnitz.
Insectarium
Insects are unsurpassed on earth in their diversity and bizarre beauty. With around one million known species, they make up four-fifths of the entire animal world and can be found in almost all regions. The Insectarium shows animals from all over the world in many aesthetically designed terrariums, busy honey bees in a glass beehive as well as other arthropods such as tarantulas, crabs and scorpions.
