Lecture by Dr. Steffen Trümper, Münster:
Mystery of silicification unraveled: How nature freezes life on a cellular scale.
Fossils, in which even cells are preserved in three dimensions, are among the most impressive archives of past life. Ever since microscopes first penetrated these micro-worlds almost 400 years ago, researchers have been asking themselves how such evidence of the earth's history is created. The answer to this question is not only of earthly importance: the search for life on other planets cannot ignore such fossils either. The lecture will provide an insight into a current research project that is using modern methods to shed light on the darkness and reveal 200 million years of history.
