Lecture by Dr. Steffen Trümper, Chemnitz:
When life stood still: On the trail of a mass extinction in the Antarctic.
251 million years ago, one of the greatest crises of life known to us occurred. An estimated 95 % of all species in the oceans and three quarters of all life on land disappeared in this mass extinction event, which marked the end of an entire age and is therefore known as the Permian-Triassic event. Scientists are feverishly searching for clues in rocks from all over the world in order to understand the causes and consequences of this event. Another archive of this mass extinction has now been found in one of the most remote places on earth: in the icy heart of East Antarctica! Penguins, glaciers and fossils - the lecture takes the audience on an exciting research trip to the traces of a prehistoric catastrophe at the end of the modern world.
